Jon Newsome reacts to 'incredible' Dominic Calvert-Lewin controversy in Leeds draw vs Sunderland
Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin had strong appeals for a penalty waved away against Sunderland.
In the 76th minute of the rather underwhelming 0-0 draw, Luke O'Nien brought the striker down as they were challenging for a loose rebound.
Ao Tanaka's shot was saved and parried by Robin Roefs and the Whites' forward got a touch on the rebound, but was clearly impeded by the defender.
Roefs eventually got to the ball, but Calvert-Lewin was asking for a penalty after O'Nien's interference.
On-field referee Stuart Attwell and VAR official Craig Pawson didn't think there was much to it.
A lot of the West Yorkshire outfit's fans and pundits would disagree after what was seen at the Stadium of Light.
Should Leeds United have had a penalty vs Sunderland?
Attwell didn't have the best of games at the Stadium of Light, making some questionable decisions.
The on-field referee can be forgiven for missing the incident, however, VAR had the benefit of a replay.
Former Leeds defender Jon Newsome couldn't believe the referee didn't point to the spot after O'Nien's challenge on Calvert-Lewin.
Adam Pope was also baffled by the decision as the Sunderland centre-back wasn't subtle in what he did to the English striker.
Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds on 25 October, Newsome said, "That's a penalty. He just dives into him. Incredible. Anywhere else on the pitch and that's a foul."
Pope added, "The defender has just smashed into him. He bundles him over. I don't get it at all."
What Daniel Farke got wrong in draw vs Sunderland
Daniel Farke was forced into making three changes to his starting line-up against Sunderland due to fitness issues.
Nico Elvedi was replaced by Jaka Bijol, while Harry Wilson and Brenden Aaronson started in place of Anton Stach and Noah Okafor.
The attackers were unable to do much in the game and were eventually replaced in the second half.
Farke kept Lukas Nmecha and Sean Longstaff on the bench until the final minutes, where the latter especially made a strong impact.
Jean-Matteo Bahoya's pace could've also given the West Yorkshire outfit the edge they lacked in attack, but he was an unused substitute.
The German manager should've been more proactive with his in-game decisions as the Peacocks are now winless in their last four Premier League matches.
