Keith Hackett: Why Jayden Bogle was correct to avoid red card in Leeds controversy vs Sunderland
Keith Hackett believes it was the right call not to send off Leeds United defender Jayden Bogle against Sunderland.
Bogle was booked in the second half after catching Reinildo high in the side with his studs when challenging for a high ball.
Sunderland fans were outraged online, believing that the Leeds star should have been given his marching orders at the Stadium of Light.
It was as much as action as we saw on Sunday, with Daniel Farke and Leeds forced to settle for a 0-0 draw.
With Storm Boelo crashing into the north of England over the weekend, it certainly tooks it toll on this Premier League statemate.
And Stuart Attwell may have taken that into account with his punishments.
Why Jayden Bogle punishment was right
Hackett believes that a yellow card was just about right, with no malice or intention behind the tackle.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News after the controversy, the ex-PGMOL chief revealed why allowances were made.
"Throughout the game the strong wind made conditions difficult for players and the referee," Hackett said.
"In my opinion, referee Attwell, who is no stranger to the strict application of the law, made allowances for the weather conditions.
"There was no malice in this challenge but it was reckless.
"A yellow card for a reckless challenge would have been appropriate."
Was Jayden Bogle lucky?
Everyone of a Sunderland persuasion certainly thought so, and an image circulating online did help that narrative.
Reinildo copped some serious damage to his side, with three-to-four huge scratches from the contact.
You could see that Bogle was instantly apologetic, and there was no malice behind the accidental contact.
They have definitely been given before, though, so it's one of those challenges you don't want to see to often.
It certainly affected how Bogle played after, with several loose challenges and not enough aggressive nature in his defending.
Hopefully now, this can be put to bed.
When certain players may be holding that burden or possibly struggling with it, though, Farke simply has to be more proactive.
With more attacking players on the bench and five-at-the-back, could Leeds have gone for three points more?
Bogle was an easy substitution to make, but it never came, and thankfully, it didn't backfire in the end.
