Dominic Calvert-Lewin 'surprise' shared as Leeds star makes England cameo
Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin was given a late run-out as England comfortably defeated Czechia on Tuesday.
Harry Kane equalled Peter Shilton's all-time appearance record for the Three Lions in the UEFA Nations League clash at Wembley.
Kane was always likely to start once again for England, and so that proved as Calvert-Lewin had to watch on from the bench.
The Bayern Munich striker netted twice after Vladimir Coufal's rather comical own goal to open the scoring.
However, he was brought on in the final 10 minutes at Wembley as England saw out the routine 3-0 win.
But Matt Upson was surprised by what he saw.
What 'surprised' Matt Upson in England win vs Czechia
Tuesday's match was all about Kane as he matched Shilton's long-standing record.
Not only did he match one impressive record, he extended another as he broke past the 90-goals mark for England.
Kane looked well up for it, as he always does, and Upson did not expect him to go off early.
"I'm a little bit surprised," Upson said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
However, the former England centre-back did then go on to say: "When you look at the game, it has gone a little bit flat - the edge and the energy has gone out of the England team."
How did Calvert-Lewin perform in latest England cameo?
Calvert-Lewin had just eight minutes on the field in England's final game of this prolonged window.
The 29-year-old attempted just three passes and completed all of those.
He failed to win either of his two duels, though, and had just seven touches of the ball.
In total across England's four games this autumn, Calvert-Lewin featured for 21 minutes in total - 13 of those against Spain in the first of the games.
It is hard to gauge what the striker will make of the situation, as he knows full well Kane is not being dislodged anytime soon.
Being back-up is the next best thing, and by maintaining his form with Leeds he will ensure he remains as part of Thomas Tuchel's squad going forward.
