Croke Park staff blasted as Leeds vs Man United ends in farcical circumstances
Leeds United's defeat to Manchester United ended in farcical fashion on Wednesday due to pitch invaders at Croke Park in Dublin.
Daniel Farke was seen storming down the tunnel before the referee blew up for full-time as multiple pitch invaders made their way onto the field to seek selfies from Man United players.
Leeds managed to come from behind to draw 1-1 with Man United in the standard 90 minutes on Wednesday, but lost 5-4 on penalties after misses by Harry Wilson and James Justin.
Bruno Fernandes was also the only Man United player to miss from the spot after being the main man that was being approached by fans before the full-time whistle was blown.
FIFA-listed Irish referee Neil Doyle did not allow play to restart after he paused it due to the offenders.
And ex-Premier League referee Keith Hackett has pointed the finger of blame at who he believes holds responsibility for the incident.
Croke Park stewards slammed for role in Leeds vs Man United incident
Hackett was less than pleased to see stewards failing to stop pitch invaders from making their way onto the field of play before the game had ended.
He believes that the players' safety was at risk and has called on the authorities to act and punish the multiple offenders.
"Football players security is so important and it was wrong of the stewards not to make every effort to block any entry and to quickly eject the fans who were involved," Hackett told MOT Leeds News.
"I hope that the authorities fine the offenders and hand them 12-month stadium bans."
How everyone reacted to the pitch invasion
ITV decided to not show any of the pitch invasion but instead focussed on the annoyed-looking Farke on the touchline, who went down the tunnel less than impressed.
At least five people made their way onto the pitch, with some fellow supporters in the stands cheering.
While the penalty shoot-out was underway, a PA announcement said that the game would be stopped again if anyone else invaded the field of play.
That didn't seem to happen as Man United went on to win on penalties and lif the Boyle Sports Cup.
