Leeds United transfer plans must shift after Joe Gelhardt exploits at Hull

Leeds United are believed to be lining up a Joe Gelhardt sale in the summer.

The 23-year-old has been at Elland Road since 2020, but he has had multiple loan spells away from the club.

The Liverpool-born striker has struggled to get into Daniel Farke’s plans, making just 16 appearances for the club in his spell in charge.

He has played 57 times for the Whites in total, with three goals and seven assists in that time, never fully earning the boss’ trust.

However, Leeds may have to reconsider their stance on a Gelhardt transfer, after what he has done in the Championship with Hull City.

How has Gelhardt performed this season?

Gelhardt has been in brilliant form away from Leeds, which could change Farke and Co’s mind on a potential exit.

He has notched 14 goals and four assists in 39 league matches, and if he could translate that into the Premier League, then it could be a mistake to let him leave.

It could save the Whites a fortune if they can reintegrate him into the squad as a backup option for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Why keeping Gelhardt makes sense for Leeds

Leeds are understood to be looking at a minimal fee for the young forward, which does not represent how he has performed this year in the second tier.

The Peacocks are believed to want between £3million to £5m, which does not make sense, they would be better off keeping him if that is the price tag that they are asking for from interested parties.

Given that he is under contract until the summer of 2027, they are under no obligation to sell at the moment, and should give him a chance to make an impact in a rotation role in the final year of his deal.

Then they can make a decision on his future, whether to sell him or extend his contract, and if they sell in January, they could surely demand a similar fee to what they want this summer.

Therefore, it is a no-brainer for the 49ers Enterprises to keep him around, and they need to shift their transfer plans around and not sanction a departure for the promising attacker.
