Why Leeds United feel 'robbed' after SCR change as long-term verdict shared

Leeds United would have preferred to operate under PSR regulations rather than SCR rules this summer.

The Whites have faced some difficult financial tasks in recent years, but have set themselves up well for another successful season in the Premier League.

Paraag Marathe and Co. splashed out over £85million to bring seven new faces to Elland Road in the transfer window, but they know more could have been spent under different circumstances.

The Leeds chairman has admitted that it will take another two seasons until the club can operate as they wish in the market, as the fight for stability off the field continues.

A change to SCR rules (Squad Cost Ratio) means Leeds were capped at spending 85 per cent of their relevant revenue on squad costs, among other restrictions.

Leeds' managing director Robbie Evans has revealed why the Whites feel like this change pegged them back this summer.

Why Leeds feel 'robbed' from SCR change

Evans has revealed that Leeds are in talks with Daniel Farke over a new contract, but compares his situation to the likes of Ethan Ampadu, suggesting patience is needed.

The Whites have been in talks with Farke for three months, and despite the fact that no agreement has been reached, Marathe and Co. still spent big again this summer on their German head coach.

However, according to Evans, the club would have been in a better financial position during this summer's transfer window, had they still been operating under PSR rules.

He's now opened up after Leeds opted against the move to SCR last year.

Evans said, as quoted by The Athletic on Friday: "This year in particular, I would rather have had PSR because we were coming out of a three-year PSR window that included a very tough first year in the Championship.

"That year was going to roll off our three-year window this year, and that could have given us potentially a lot of freedom this summer. The move from PSR to SCR robbed us of that opportunity."

However, Evans has admitted that SCR will be better for Leeds in their long-term future, due to the fact that the new system suits clubs with a bigger fanbase and strong commercial revenues.

Why SCR change could be impacting Daniel Farke contract talks

Leeds are hoping to secure Farke on a new long-term deal before his current contract expires at the end of the season.

The 49-year-old has hinted that he will not stay if the club cannot match his ambitions.

Following the change to SCR, Evans has already suggested that Leeds will not have as much flexibility as they would like in terms of spending for the short term.

This follows Marathe's two-year admission about Leeds' spending restriction, which could be in Farke's thinking.

The head coach is aware that Leeds cannot operate as they wish in the market until the 2028-29 campaign at the very earliest.

That said, there is no guarantee at this stage over Farke's future at Leeds.
