Leeds United have been linked with a potential move for SC Freiburg defender Robin Koch for some time now.
Ever since Victor Orta admitted back in January that he had compiled a scouting report on the 23-year-old, the German has been a player who has been the focus of considerable attention in Yorkshire.
Ex-Elland Road goalkeeper Paul Robinson even went as far as to suggest to MOT Leeds News that the Whites could hold an advantage in the race to snap him up this summer because of the influence and reputation of manager Marcelo Bielsa.
With Koch’s contract set to expire in 2021, and with the player seemingly showing no intention of renewing his deal, Freiburg could well face the prospect of having to sell him in the coming months to prevent him leaving for free further down the line.
But the latest report from German outlet Bild could throw a sizeable spanner in the works for Leeds.
According to the publication, Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are also interested in the player, and see him as an ideal acquisition this summer.
His age, combined with his status as a full German international and the fact that he could reportedly cost as little as £10.5 million, have led to the Champions League club earmarking him as a long-term successor to Mats Hummels, who is now 31.
And if this report is true, it could represent a big problem for the Whites.
Not only do Dortmund have the status of being one of Europe’s elite clubs – and are also backed up by the financial firepower that their success has brought them – but they also have a stellar reputation for improving young talent.
The meteoric rises of players such as Jadon Sancho, Erling Braut Haaland, and Giovanni Reyna all attest to that, and even though Koch is a little older than those three, there’s no reason why he wouldn’t see a switch to Dortmund as a similarly beneficial move for his career path.
If this report is believable, it’s no exaggeration to say that it could essentially spell the end of any realistic hopes we have of luring Koch to Elland Road this summer.
