Wigan are reportedly unable to complete the deal to sign Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt in the January transfer window.

According to Football League World [24 January], the Latics have a "looming embargo" which could stop them from signing players.

Sunderland are still understood to be in the race to secure his services and a move before the transfer deadline is still on the cards.

Leeds United

Sort it out soon

The report does not mention if it is a permanent or loan move, but we do not see Leeds letting him leave for good so it's going to be on a temporary basis.

Gelhardt has proven just how good a player he can be and he'll surely develop faster if he's playing week in and week out.

Wigan would offer him familiar surroundings, but we're expecting to get similar game time at the Stadium of Light and it may actually be a good thing for him.

Leeds United

He'll be in new territory and will have to prove himself from day one so it'll give Leeds fans a good chance to see how he handles the pressure.

Him staying at Elland Road makes little to no sense as Georginio Rutter's signing has pushed him further down in the pecking order.

It'll be interesting to see how many goals he scores and whether or not he can get them into promotion contention as they're currently in 9th and have a good chance to qualify for the play-offs.
