Leeds United may well still be in the hunt to sign Porto defender Zaidu Sanusi.

Leeds revived their interest in Sanusi in the summer after reportedly having a bid rejected in January for the Nigeria international.

However, nothing came of that and the 29-year-old instead remains at Porto, where he has now spent seven seasons of his career.

He was in action on Tuesday night as the Portuguese side lost 1-0 against PSV at Estadio do Dragao.

Leeds scouts were present at the ground to watch the match, in which Sanusi played 69 minutes.

And everything points towards the full-back being the player who those Leeds figures were keeping tabs on.

Who else could Leeds scouts have been watching?

Portuguese outlet A Bola reported in its print edition on Wednesday, as relayed by Sport Witness, that Leeds were one of a number of clubs to have scouts present in the stands.

Of the players in the Porto and PSV squads, only two have been strongly linked with a move to Elland Road in the past six months.

Mauro Junior is another player Leeds wanted to sign, but he is still at PSV and played pretty much the full game on Tuesday.

Assuming Leeds were scouting a home player, though, it makes more sense that Sanusi was being watched up close.

What do we know about Zaidu Sanusi?

Sanusi has a number of standout qualities, his pace being one of them.

Speaking just last month, ex-Porto boss Sergio Conceicao said: “Physically, he's above average, extremely fast. He runs down the left flank incredibly well.”

Sanusi is a left-back by trade, but looks as though he can also operate at wing-back.

Daniel Farke already has Gabriel Gudmundsson there, of course, while Melvin Bard signed late in the window as cover.

But looking ahead, Sanusi seems to tick plenty of boxes and could well be an option for Farke in that area before long.

If nothing else, it is encouraging to see Leeds being proactive by scouting players in advance of the window opening in around 10 weeks' time.
