When Leeds are due to announce Maximilian Wober's Elland Road exit after internal agreement

Maximilian Wober is on the verge of leaving Leeds United to join Schalke on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old Austria international spent last season on loan at Werder Bremen, but only managed to make three appearances in all competitions due to severe injuries to both his hamstring and calf.

Despite the lack of game time in the 2025-26 season, which played a role in him failing to make Austria's World Cup squad this summer, it looks as though he's got the chance to redeem himself in the Bundesliga in the upcoming campaign.

Schalke are now strongly linked with sealing a deal for Wober - a deal that is set to be announced later on Wednesday.

According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Wober's medical with Schalke is all-but done and the final details of the move are being completed with Leeds.

But the terms of Wober's permanent return to Germany are causing some confusion due to conflicting - and unclear - reports.

What Leeds are getting from Schalke for Maximiliam Wober

Plettenberg reported via his X account on Wednesday afternoon that Wober is joining Schalke as a free agent.

However, the Vienna-born centre-back still has another year left on his contract at Elland Road.

Sky Sports now reports that Leeds and Wober have sought a mutual agreement to terminate his contract 12 months early in order to facilitate his freebie move to Germany.

It looks like the deal will be confirmed very soon, too, with MOT Leeds News relaying information earlier on Wednesday that Wober is already in Innsbruck, Austria to have his medical, which is where the Schalke squad are currently based on a pre-season training camp.

It draws to an end what has been a frustrating and rather sad spell at Elland Road for a defender who many fans once had high hopes for.

Wober's Leeds career in a nutshell

Leeds signed Wober from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2023 for £10m as they bid to bolster up an ailing defence that was struggling in the Premier League.

Jesse Marsch was the man behind the deal to sign Wober, but he found himself sacked a month later and the rest was history.

After relegation, he was loaned out to Borussia Monchengladbach, where he again struggled for form and had a few injury issues.

He then returned to West Yorkshire for the 2024-25 Championship season but found himself on the fringes of Daniel Farke's squad.

Yet again, he had injury issues; a knee surgery meant that he missed a few months of the campaign. However, either side of two injury absences, he only played in eight of Leeds' Championship fixtures.

Last summer, he was sent to Bremen, where he barely played again, so there'll be a lot of hope that he can turn things around with Schalke.
