Stumbling block mooted in permanent Leeds United summer transfer push for Joe Rodon
Leeds United will not be able to afford a permanent transfer for Joe Rodon this summer, if they miss out on promotion to the Premier League, according to Carlton Palmer.
The Welsh international has enjoyed an impressive season on loan with Daniel Farke’s side this season from Tottenham and could reportedly be available for between £10-£15million come the summer transfer window [TEAMtalk, 12 February].
Farke has admitted that he is keen to keep the Spurs loanee at Elland Road permanently this summer, but Palmer believes the Whites could be forced to turn to other options if they remain in the Championship.
Speaking to Football League World (1 May) he said: “I don’t think that Leeds United could afford Joe Rodon with the money that Spurs are asking unless they’re in the Premier League.
“Whereas Nat Phillips could be afforded whether they’re in the Premier League or not, so promotion or not, the manager has said that Phillips would be a player that he would want to sign.”
Will Leeds United sign Joe Rodon permanently from Tottenham Hotspur this summer?
If money was no object, everyone at Leeds United would be unanimous in their belief that Rodon simply has to be bought permanently this summer. But with automatic promotion slipping out of reach, it becomes harder for the Whites.
Ipswich’s win against Coventry City on Tuesday (30 May) all but guarantees Farke’s side will have to settle for a place in the playoffs this term and it remains to be seen whether they will make an immediate return to the top-flight.

Financial fair play concerns at Elland Road have seen some suggest that the German could be forced to sell some of his best players during the summer transfer window. If that is the case, it’s hard to see Leeds shelling £15million out on one player.
Hopefully, Farke’s side will book their place in the Premier League next term one way or another and then maybe the Whites can begin plotting a permanent swoop for Rodon. If not, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Welshman elsewhere next term.
