Sky Sports journalist shares what he’s been told about Leeds star Junior Firpo
Leeds United are waiting to understand Junior Firpo’s future before making a move for Matt Targett, according to Keith Downie.
The Sky Sports journalist reported via his YouTube channel [31 January] that the Whites have opened talks for the Newcastle United defender but nothing has advanced due to their own left-back.
It is understood that Real Sociedad are interested in the Dominican Republic international, who has entered the final six months of his contract at Elland Road, but Firpo is still a Leeds player right now.
Southampton and Watford are also keeping tabs on Targett, with Leicester City previously entering the race for the 29-year-old’s signature.
“I expect Matt Targett to go. I’ve not put this out anywhere yet, but I was told yesterday that there had been some talks with Leeds but Leeds are waiting to hear what is happening with their left-back, Junior Firpo,” Downie said.
“There’s some interest from Real Sociedad there, so if Firpo was to go, Targett could be an option there, but, as it stands, Firpo is still a Leeds player.
“I’ve also been told that there’s interest from Southampton and Watford in Targett, while I was told previously a couple of weeks ago that Leicester were interested as well.”
Junior Firpo to secure Leeds United exit before 3 February?
Leeds would be incredibly foolish to get rid of their attacking left-back before the transfer window closes, especially if they were to replace him with someone like Targett.
The 28-year-old has become a much-loved figure at Elland Road, with many supporters wanting him to be offered a contract extension, having notched one goal and 10 assists in the last two league campaigns.
Of course, he is often hit by injuries, leaving Farke with limited cover at full-back, but only means the Whites need to find a back-up to Firpo rather than replace him altogether.

He certainly struggled when Leeds were playing in the Premier League, but having had time to settle into life in England, the second time round could be much more positive for the defender.
Losing Firpo in the summer would not be the end of the world due to the signing of Isaac Schmidt and Sam Byram being an ever-present, but the club would need to find a successor in the position.
