Paul Merson has shared why he believes Leeds United should be all over Burnley forward Zian Flemming.

Leeds have yet to recruit a new striker this summer, although Harry Wilson has been added to Daniel Farke's wide options.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin will once again be Farke's go-to man up top when fit and well.

The England international impressed in his maiden campaign at Elland Road with 14 Premier League goals.

Calvert-Lewin proved his doubters wrong by staying fit pretty much all season as he made 35 top-flight appearances.

However, Merson believes Leeds should be looking to bring in further cover, which is where Flemming comes into the mix.

Paul Merson raises Dominic Calvert-Lewin concern

There is no doubt Leeds could do with signing a back-up option to Calvert-Lewin.

While it is true Farke does have others in the squad who can come into the side, there is no real like-for-like replacement.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on Saturday afternoon, Merson mentioned Leeds unprompted when discussing Flemming's future at Burnley.

"I'm shocked he's not still in the Premier League," Merson said. "If I was the Leeds manager, I'd be taking him at Leeds.

"Calvert-Lewin did great last season, but you're not sure he'll be able to play that number of games again.

"[Flemming] is a battering ram. You come off the pitch and think that's a hard game."

Flemming scored 11 goals in 29 Premier League appearances for relegated Burnley last season.

The 28-year-old bagged 12 in 35 the previous season to help the Clarets to promotion.

What type of striker are Leeds targeting?

It was reported earlier this month that Leeds are indeed in the market for a new number nine.

Merson is just echoing the views of many before him with his concerns over Calvert-Lewin staying fit once again.

But a move for Flemming does not match the criteria Leeds have set for their next signing in that area.

Instead, Leeds want to sign a young striker to cover for Calvert-Lewin.

At the age of 28, as good as Flemming is, it does not look as though Leeds will seriously pursue a move.
