Sheffield Wednesday want to sign player who is on verge of Leeds exit - report
Sheffield Wednesday are in the hunt to sign Eddie Nketiah, with the Arsenal striker just hours away from his loan spell at Leeds United coming to an end, according to the Daily Mail.
Nketiah, 20, made only his first Championship start of the season on Sunday when he replaced Patrick Bamford in the starting line-up ahead of the Whites’ 5-4 win against Birmingham.
However the Mail claims that Marcelo Bielsa’s decision to start Nketiah at St Andrew’s has been too little too late as Arsenal are set to recall the England Under-21 international “in the next 48 hours”.
It is understood that Leeds’ Championship rivals are queuing up to sign Nketiah as the Gunners prepare to send the striker out for a second loan spell of the season.
Sheffield Wednesday, Bristol City, Nottingham Forest and Brentford are reportedly in the hunt to land him on a half-season deal.
Arsenal cannot be pleased with the amount of game-time that Nketiah has been handed since joining Leeds on a season-long loan in the summer transfer window.
Although the forward has made 18 appearances and scored five goals in all competitions, he has only started once in the league and twice in the Carabao Cup for the Whites.
Arsenal have every right to terminate that loan deal early if they feel as though Nketiah’s development is better served at a team where he will get more minutes in the Championship.
However, is Nketiah going to be able to learn as much from any other manager in the Championship as he would have from Bielsa?
It remains to be seen how the England youth international will fare elsewhere but whichever way you look at it, this is a blow for Leeds because they will now need to replace him – and that could prove tricky.
