Sam Greenwood transfer clause revealed after loan move from Leeds United

Sam Greenwood’s loan move to Preston North End includes an option to buy clause from Leeds United, according to the Lancashire Post.

The regional outlet reported on their website that similarly to Middlesbrough last season, Preston are believed to have ensured that a permanent buy option was part of Greenwood’s loan move to Deepdale.

While Middlesbrough opted not to trigger their £1.5million option to sign Greenwood, it is implied Preston could be inclined to if his performances match those of FC Basel loanee Liam Millar last season [Northern Echo, 9 May].

Sam Greenwood loan transfer suggests time at Leeds United is up

After five goals in 35 appearances on loan at Middlesbrough last season, including some very eye-catching strikes, it’s somewhat surprising that Michael Carrick’s side didn’t exercise their buyout option [Instagram, 7 May].

Preston may have a different view in 12 months, having regretted not having a similar clause in their loan deal for Millar, whose own tally of five in 35 included a winner against Leeds in December.

Greenwood had made some strong cameos for the Whites before their relegation in 2023, particularly after undergoing a positional switch to central midfield having previously been an out-and-out striker.

Operating on the left side of midfield for much of his time at Middlesbrough, it remains to be seen if Preston will utilise the 22-year-old in the same way to act as Millar’s replacement at Deepdale.

Regardless, it’s clear that Greenwood has no path back into the first team at Elland Road, and with the chance to become a hero at Preston, this season presents an opportunity he must grab with both hands [Paul Robinson, 31 March].
