Middlesbrough make £1.5m transfer decision on Leeds United loanee Sam Greenwood

Middlesbrough have decided against signing Sam Greenwood on a permanent deal from Leeds United after his loan spell ended, according to The Northern Echo.

The Whites agreed to a £1.5million arrangement for Boro to sign the Englishman at the end of the season if they wished, but they have opted against it.

Dominic Shaw has reported [9 May] that Michael Carrick's side have decided to pursue other attacking targets as opposed to bringing Greenwood in on a permanent deal.

This will be the case regardless of what league Leeds are playing in - Premier League or Championship.

Should Leeds United keep Sam Greenwood?

Greenwood joined Boro in the summer on loan and has gone on to make 25 starts across 38 Championship appearances [FotMob].

In his spell with the club, he has scored five goals and provided three assists which is positive given he played just 2,213 minutes.

He may have aspired to have more of an impact on his loan spell but he did play the most games in a season in his career so far.

Under Daniel Farke, he may have been well suited given his ability to press from the front in an attacking midfield role.

This saw him win 32 tackles with a 68.1 per cent win ratio, which is positive for a forward option.

He could prove to be a useful back-up option next season, especially in the Championship, behind Georginio Rutter or Crysencio Summerville.

It is unclear what league Leeds will be in next season and whether or not Greenwood will play a part in their squad, but the ball is now very much in United's court.
