Rolland Sallai set for transfer after Leeds United snubbed with £8.5million move agreed

Rolland Sallai snubbed Leeds United after a deal was agreed to sign him from Freiburg during the transfer window, according to HITC.

The outlet reported via their website on 13 September that the Whites had a £8.5million transfer lined up for the Hungarian winger before a late change of heart about leaving the Bundesliga for the Championship.

A second attempt in the January window was thought to be on the cards with Sallai’s Freiburg deal expiring next summer.

But he now appears to be on the brink of a late switch to Galatasaray for €6million [£5.06m] instead [Fabrizio Romano, 13 September].

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Joe Donnohue it was the Whites who backed out of a £9m move to embark on their ill-fated pursuit of Gustavo Hamer instead, where a controversial £13m bid failed and they ended up with neither.

Leeds United also failed on Gustavo Hamer from Sheffield United

The end of the Whites’ transfer window was much better than many of the weeks that preceded it on the whole, with four signings secured to restock Daniel Farke’s options.

Ao Tanaka, Manor Solomon, Largie Ramazani and Isaac Schmidt were a decent haul, but a further attacking recruit was thought to be wanted [Yorkshire Evening Post, 30 August].

And Farke made clear his dissatisfaction at the lack of a number 10 to replace Georginio Rutter in a first sign of discontent between the German and his bosses [Graham Smyth, 2 September].

Angus Kinnear has attempted to explain away the controversial attempt to sign Hamer [Square Ball, 12 September], which so upset Chris Wilder, but only partly cleared the matter up.

It would be all the more of a calamitous move if Leeds backed out of the move for Sallai to then fail to land the Blades star.

But even if the Hungarian international, who is primarily a winger but can play as a second striker, was the one who got cold feet it will rankle to see him on the move to Turkey for nearly half the price.
