This is what I've heard: Midlands journalist delivers significant update on player Leeds chasing
Coventry City journalist Andy Turner has delivered what he calls “the truth” about the pursuit of defender Sam McCallum this January.
Leeds United are said to be “big admirers” of the 19-year-old left-back who’s broken into the City first team.
Premier League sides Leicester City, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Manchester City are also credited with an interest – exactly the sort of sides Leeds want to be competing with going forward, hopefully, to the Premier League.
90min.com reported at the weekend that Liverpool are in pole position to sign the youngster.
However, writing in the Coventry Telegraph on Monday, Turner said that he has heard that “the club have not received a single inquiry or phone call, let alone a bid for McCallum”.
They are, however, expecting that to change next month.
Coventry manager Mark Robins has said previously that it would take a “monumental” bid to prise him away from the midlands.
In this case, no news is good news for Leeds. It sounds like the report from 90min.com has jumped the gun, with Turner a very reliable source for Coventry.
The club is expecting interest in McCallum in January and he would be a brilliant addition for Leeds. Leeds would also be a club that could offer a much more direct route to the first team through the Under-23s than any Premier League side.
A manager saying the words “monumental bid” might have alarm bells ringing but a monumental bid for Coventry should still be within the grasp of Leeds.
And McCallum is the sort of player we should be targeting in a position that needs extra cover.
Barry Douglas hasn’t played much this season and utility man Stuart Dallas has been starting over Gjanni Alioski.
