Leeds United will miss out on the chance to sign Udinese midfielder Rodrigo De Paul with Inter Milan set to land him in the summer, according to TuttoSport.

De Paul’s future at Udinese has been the subject of widespread speculation since the summer when Messaggero Veneto reported Leeds agreed a contract with the Argentina international but could not match the Serie A club’s £36.5million asking-price.

The 26-year-old even took to Twitter to declare his interest in signing for the Whites before deleting his tweet amid negotiations between the Premier League club and Udinese [Fabrizio Romano].

However, it seems that De Paul’s transfer saga is coming to an end – and it’s an end that won’t please Leeds United supporters.

According to Italian news outlet TuttoSport, once Christian Eriksen is moved on from the San Siro, De Paul will head to Milan.

The Serie A midfielder is understood to have decided he wants to sign for Inter, which serves as a killer blow for Leeds.

De Paul – the one who got away

De Paul was still being linked with a move to Elland Road this month despite the frustrating deadlock in talks with Udinese in the summer.

The Sun had reported earlier this month that Leeds and Liverpool were battling to sign the former Valencia player, who’s scored four goals and supplied three assists in 19 appearances across all competitions this season for Udinese.

It was understood that Marcelo Bielsa was weighing up to bid for De Paul this month or at the end of the season but that seems futile now based on the major update from TuttoSport.

There’s no doubt in our mind that De Paul would have been a hit in the Premier League too.

Stats by Wyscout show that the midfielder ranks fourth in Serie A for xG and xA this season [11.86].

No player in Italy’s top-flight has made more key passes than De Paul [23] while he also ranks second for one-versus-one dribbles attempted [128].

De Paul will more than likely go down as the one who got away from Leeds if he continues to strut his stuff at Inter Milan.

Let’s hope Bielsa and Victor Orta can dig out someone just as good next summer because they could end up kicking themselves over not paying that extra bid of money Udinese wanted.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites want to sign this creative midfielder and a spot could open up for him if Tyler Roberts leaves this month.
