PSV could listen to offers for Leeds United-linked forward Cody Gakpo amid £40m transfer development

PSV forward Cody Gakpo could cost Leeds United £40million if they were to sign the Netherlands international this summer, according to The Mirror.

The newspaper reported on their website on Saturday (6 August) that Arsenal and Manchester United are also interested in the 23-year-old with the latter eyeing a potential replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

It is understood that PSV will listen to offers for Gakpo as soon as they know where they stand in European football this season as they face the second leg of their Champions League qualifying clash with Monaco next week (Tuesday, 9 August).

If PSV win after drawing the first leg 1-1, they’ll play either Rangers or Union Saint-Gilloise to decide whether they’ll make the Champions League group stages this season.

Impressive comparisons

Gakpo’s impressive – there’s no other way of saying it.

He won the Dutch football of the year award last season and that’s no surprise given the fact he scored 12 goals and supplied 12 assists in his 27 Eredivisie appearances.

Gakpo would be a top signing for Leeds but he is mainly a left-sided winger.

Leeds have an issue there because they already have Jack Harrison, Luis Sinisterra, Stuart Dallas and Daniel James who can do a job in that position while it’s not beyond the capabilities of Ian Poveda and Crysensio Summerville either.

Gakpo can play as a striker – maybe that’s why Leeds want him.

Patrick Bamford got off to a good start this season on Saturday as he grabbed an assist in the 2-1 win against Wolves but his injury record hasn’t been reliable and we have no proper back-up for him.

Is Gakpo seen as a striker by Jesse Marsch and Victor Orta?

It would make sense if they did but we might be better off getting an out-and-out striker if that’s the case.

Gakpo’s a great player – he’s been compared to Robin van Persie and Thierry Henry.

But £40million is a lot of money if he’s not going to be played to his strengths.

In other Leeds United news, a deal for this senior player to quit Elland Road is all but done.
