Phil Hay reacts as Leeds United table major bid to sign Red Bull Salzburg ace Aaronson

Phil Hay is excited by speculation linking Leeds United with a move for Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson.

The Athletic journalist Sam Stejskal reported on Tuesday night [18 January] that Leeds have seen a £15million bid for Aaronson, 21, rejected by Salzburg.

It is understood that despite the initial rejection, the Whites remain keen on signing the USA international.

Stejskal’s colleague from The Athletic, Hay, clearly feels that Aaronson would be a clever addition for Marcelo Bielsa.

“[I] like the sound of this one if it happens. Good age, operating at a high level already, playing in an area where Leeds need more resources,” said Hay via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday night in instant response to the reported bid.

Bielsa’s midfield has been a man or two short for some time now and efforts really need to be made to add faces this month.

Aaronson is young and everything we’ve read about him suggests that he would be a good signing for Leeds.

While we know that the strength of the Austrian league isn’t that strong and Red Bull Salzburg dominate that league easier than Manchester City do in the Premier League, he’s still done well at his club.

This season, Aaronson has scored three goals and supplied seven assists in 26 appearances across all competitions.

The attacking midfielder, who plays in a central role, was also vital in Salzburg qualifying for the Champions League last-16 as he started all six of their group matches.

Adam Forshaw’s injury at West Ham on Sunday means is panic stations for Leeds in regards to their midfield issues.

Rodrigo came off the bench to return from injury, luckily, but he’s struggled to consistently impress at Leeds and Aaronson is someone who could have a big future here at Elland Road.

That £15million bid seems like a lot of money and it’s going to take more to land the USA ace.

But it may be worth it.
