Phil Hay posts positive 3-word Leeds striker transfer update for player dubbed next Wayne Rooney

Leeds United have been credited with an interest in Championship striker Joe Gelhardt on Saturday according to journalist Adam Crafton.

The 18-year-old striker has made 17 appearances for Wigan this season after breaking into the senior side in the 18/19 campaign.

However, it looks like he’s going to be on the move this summer after Crafton said that many clubs were chasing him, including Tottenham and Man United.

A Leicester move seems to have been put on ice while Wigan administrators hold talks with Championship sides on Monday.

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay is the number one trusted source for Leeds transfer stories and one fan asked him whether Gelhardt was set for talks with the Whites.

Hay delivered a very positive response saying, “Leeds like Gelhardt”.

This is an exciting development.

Back in February the Sun’s transfer expert Alan Nixon said that Everton were lining up a move for a player who “Marcel Brandts is desperate to sign”.

Nixon said that Gelhardt was turning heads and effecting a “scramble for his signature” and described him as Wigan’s “next Wayne Rooney” because of his power and eye for goal.

He also said that Gelhardt is rated as the best young player that Wigan have ever found.

That’s some recommendation and, along with clubs such as Spurs, Man United and Leicester jostling for his signature, it spells a real talent.

Wigan are in deep trouble. The administrators are in and they’re going to have to sell players very shortly.

The Crafton report claims that the administrators are holding talks with Championship clubs on Monday and we presume Leeds – the only second-tier side mentioned – will be one of those.

It’s said that he could be snapped up for as little as £1.5m in a Wigan fire sale.

Hay’s tweet is quite cryptic but he chooses when to release information. He was asked a direct question about talks and the response was positive.

Leeds are obviously interested and we could see movement on this quite soon by the sounds of it.

Hopefully, that will be movement towards Leeds who desperately need back-up in that area.
