Phil Hay names unnamed central midfielder Leeds United are trying to sign
Phil Hay has revealed Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher is the identity of the unnamed central midfielder Leeds United are trying to sign.
On Friday, The Athletic journalist took to Twitter to relay some transfer news from his colleagues which claimed that Leeds have made an approach to sign the 21-year-old midfielder.
Earlier this month, the Yorkshire Evening Post reported that Leeds’ director of football Victor Orta had been in talks with an unnamed central midfielder who’d been made the Whites’ number one target.
After that update by The Athletic, ex-YEP journalist Hay was asked whether Gallagher is that player and he responded by simply saying: “Yes.”
Perfect Bielsa player
Leeds fans might not be too happy with the idea of a straight loan deal for Gallagher and we can see why.
According to The Athletic, Chelsea will not consider letting the ex-West Brom loan star leave permanently and could get him tied down to a new contract before he’s loaned out this summer.
It suggests that even a loan-to-buy deal could be off the table and that’s not exactly thrilling for Leeds fans, who had to witness Marcelo Bielsa turn Ben White into one of England’s best centre-backs before bidding farewell to him.
However, just having Gallagher for one season could be a great way to help pad out Bielsa’s midfield options as we aim to improve on what was achieved last season.
Steve Madeley is Hay’s colleague at The Athletic and he covers West Brom, who had Gallagher on loan from Chelsea last season.
Madeley describes Gallagher as someone whose “energy and commitment are perfect for Bielsa”.
After watching Gallagher play last season, that’s definitely a fair judgement because he’s a player who doesn’t stop running, will always put his body on the line for the team and has a bit of technical ability about himself too.
In other Leeds United news, this Whites forward has been spotted in the kit of another team.
