Phil Hay moots Helder Costa exit as Leeds United close in on Daniel James

Phil Hay has mooted the possibility of Helder Costa leaving Leeds United on deadline day with Daniel James reportedly close to arriving from Manchester United.

The Athletic journalist reported earlier on Monday that James, 23, is set to arrive in Leeds to complete a £25million move to the club from Manchester United.

When a Leeds fan responded by saying that Under-23s winger Crysencio Summerville is unlikely to be happy with James’ imminent move to Elland Road, Hay suggested that it’s actually 27-year-old Costa who may have to consider his future.

Costa should go

For the sake of everyone, Costa needs to leave Leeds United on deadline day.

Obviously, we don’t want to see Costa forced out of the club because at the end of the day, he’s been a good servant for Leeds, a massive professional and was part of our historic promotion-winning season.

However, he’s just not cut out for the Premier League.

With James headed to Yorkshire to sign from Man United, Marcelo Bielsa now has another winger in his squad that pushes Costa down the pecking order.

Raphinha, Jack Harrison, Tyler Roberts and Stuart Dallas can already play out wide for Leeds – you don’t need both Costa and James thrown into the mix too.

Costa, a one-time Portugal international who joined Leeds permanently from Wolves last summer for £16million, has already attracted attention this summer.

Hay reported last month that Valencia have shown an interest in Costa and joining the La Liga club would definitely be a positive move for the ex-Wolves and Benfica winger.

We don’t want to see Costa rot away in our Under-23s or barely play any football up until January so as soon as the James deal is rubber-stamped, the Portuguese ace should be on his way.

In other Leeds United news, Victor Orta has been spotted making a gesture to fans at Elland Road after being caught on camera on the phone.
