Phil Hay: Leeds spending big may depend on major player sales

Phil Hay has insisted it wouldn’t be “widely inaccurate” to assume Leeds United need to sell one or two of their big stars.

Andrea Radrizzani spoke out this week, appearing to claim that he is ready to spend big next season to push the Whites towards European football.

Hay was questioned on that, and believes that one or two players may need to leave in order for that to happen at Elland Road.

Writing in the comments on his latest piece for The Athletic, Hay responded to fans asking where the money will come from to spend big.

“Hard to predict that at this stage because it depends on factors – is Bielsa staying, how have individuals played etc,” he wrote.

“And the budget. But yes, they will need investment as the seasons go on. It’s most likely to come from 49ers Enterprises via the purchase of more shares, or that’s my view anyway.

“But while staying up this season would be fine, to push on they will have to address aspects of the squad. No doubt about that.”

That was followed by a fan prediction to which Hay responded: “I don’t think that’s a wildly inaccurate prediction.”

Who could it be?

Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips are the two names that instantly pop to mind.

Although it could be deemed as inevitable, some may not forgive the club if those two were allowed to leave Elland Road for little money.

It would need to bring in a combined amount up to at least £150million-plus for us to even consider it worthwhile.

And if that happens, five or more players would need to be brought in and considering Raphinha cost less than £20million, that is easily possible.

Hopefully, with added investment from the San Francisco 49ers, Leeds can get the best of both worlds – keeping Raphinha and Phillips, as well as heavily investing in the squad.

Fingers crossed things can be turned around this season, and we can enter next summer and season with the real goal of European football.
