Paul Merson: Kalvin Phillips must join Liverpool from Leeds United
Paul Merson has urged Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips to join Liverpool over Manchester United in the imminent future.
The Yorkshire Pirlo has been linked with a major move for quite some time, with the Whites now sweating over a potential contract extension.
Merson believes that Phillips has to do everything himself at Elland Road, and a move away could stop him from burning out eventually.
Writing in his Daily Star column, Merson insisted that Phillips would only remain a hero in Yorkshire one way.
“Kalvin Phillips should join Liverpool, not Manchester United,” he wrote.
“But I don’t think he takes either of those teams to another level. He’s a good player who would play every week whichever one he signs for. But not a gamechanger.
“If he goes to Anfield he will still be remembered as a Leeds United hero. But if he goes to Old Trafford that all goes out the window.
“And a Leeds United player going to Manchester United? Wow. Better start well. That’s pressure. At Leeds he will get burnt out. I think he’s virtually left on his own too much in midfield at Leeds and he has to do everything.”
Does Merson not know anything about Phillips? Not only as a footballer, but also a person?
The Yorkshire Pirlo loves Leeds, the city, the club and the people there – would he throw that away just for one big payday at Old Trafford? Never.
Liverpool’s interest would turn heads, surely but we have seen with Raphinha in the past year that the Whites won’t just stand aside.
Andrea Radrizzani and his team simply have to stop negotiating and give Phillips whatever he wants to sign this new contract.
Atleast that way, Leeds are protected should Phillips want to move and will receive a huge sum of money to reinvest into the squad.
In other Leeds United news, Sky Sports have hinted if Raphinha will be out for the long-term with his injury problem
