Patrick Bamford transfer to Wrexham mooted in Leeds United exit

Wrexham are one of few British clubs who could fund a move to sign Patrick Bamford from Leeds United in January, Jonny Buchan has said.

Speaking on the Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet podcast (16 December), BBC journalist Buchan, Adam Pope and Simon Rex questioned whether the celebrity-owned League One side could try a January move for Bamford.

The 31-year-old hasn’t made a Championship start this season and is yet to score in eight appearances, most recently missing a gilt-edge chance in the Whites’ 1-1 draw at Preston on 14 December.

Pope asked: “Who could spend big money to get Patrick Bamford out of Leeds United? It’s not going to happen in the Championship, I don’t think a Premier League club’s going to take a risk on him, so what does that leave elsewhere?”

Buchan replied: “Well, it leaves big spenders in League One, where we know that they’re allowed to spend differently because of the way the regulations work at that level, and it leaves…”

“Wrexham,” Rix said.

Buchan responded: “Well, there you go – Wrexham are a side that are in the mix in League One, and you wonder whether they might have a look.”

Patrick Bamford to seal Wrexham transfer?

Should Bamford see out the rest of his current contract at Elland Road, he won’t leave the club until June 2026, almost eight years since he first signed for the club in the 2018 summer transfer window.

On an upward trajectory following an injury-afflicted first season under Marcelo Bielsa in LS11, Bamford’s time with the Whites reached its apex when he scored 17 Premier League goals in 2020-21.

Since then though, lengthy dry spells in front of goal and even lengthier injury absences have seen Bamford fall down the pecking order, even though he’s still got the ability to be the club’s best striker.

Joel Piroe’s finishing and Mateo Joseph’s all-action style in open play reflect the best of Bamford at his peak, but questions remain over which of the three is the most effective for Daniel Farke to use upfront.

Bamford departing in January may free up funds – and space in the squad – for a new arrival in attack, but it remains to be seen if Farke will be willing to sanction the exit of Leeds’ long-time number nine.
