Leeds United defender Maximilian Wober is "unlikely" to play for the club in the Championship next season, according to Salzburger Nachrichten.

The Austrian newspaper has reported in its print edition (3 June, page 17) that the centre-back, who spent last season on loan at Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach, is putting off discussion over his future until after EURO 2024.

Daniel Farke's side failing to win promotion in the Championship play-off final means they'll play another campaign in the second tier, calling into question the futures of players who left on season-long loan deals last summer.

Wober was also quizzed on the possibility of re-joining Red Bull Salzburg, the club Leeds signed him from in January 2023, saying he had "a very nice time" with the Austrian club.

Wober won't be welcomed back by Leeds United fans

While it's doubtful that Wober, or any of the players who departed on temporary deals following last summer's relegation from the Premier League, will be in the plans of Daniel Farke next season, it's even more unlikely that the Elland Road crowd will be hiding their feelings.

The Austrian was reportedly one of the players Farke was keen on keeping around during his first campaign in charge, but Wober's successful push to leave has likely burnt any bridges between himself and the Whites manager.

Monchengladbach did not have the option of a permanent deal for Wober in their loan agreement last summer, but Leeds' failure to achieve promotion reportedly puts them in a much stronger position for the centre-back to head back to the Bundesliga club.

Either way, Wober will be in demand this summer from a whole host of other clubs, and whether it's a return to Monchengladbach or Salzburg, either destination seems more likely than him walking out at Elland Road in the first games of next season.
