Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus has suggested a permanent deal for loanee Max Wober is unlikely if Leeds United are promoted.

The Bundesliga side signed the defender on a season-long loan last summer and are eager to make that a permanent transaction this summer.

However, with no pre-determined valuation in place, the two teams need to find a mutual agreement if Wober is to leave Elland Road for good.

Sharing an update via German outlet Bild [31 March], Virkus said: "We are currently in discussions with everyone involved.

"The thing is, Max would like to stay with us. But Leeds are first in the English second division, will be promoted and have high expectations.

"We try everything, but we don't have the reins of action in our hands."

How much do Leeds United want for Max Wober?

Gladbach Live reported a month ago that the club would not be able to sign Wober on the cheap, with Leeds likely after at least the £12million they paid Red Bull Salzburg to sign him.

However, that is on the assumption that the Whites are not promoted this season. If promotion is achieved, it will complicate matters.

As good as Leeds' defence has been this season, it has to be remembered that Joe Rodon is only on loan from Tottenham.

Ethan Ampadu was signed as more of a holding midfielder, meanwhile, yet has been a key man in the heart of defence.

An Ampadu-Rodon partnership in the Premier League could easily work, but Daniel Farke will want to strengthen further.

Wober, who is also able to slot in at left-back, could therefore have a part to play at Elland Road next season if United are in the top flight.

On that basis, it seems pretty pointless continuing negotiations until we know exactly what division we are in.
