Max Wober could quit Leeds United in £16.8m deal as last-ditch transfer ‘attack’ underway
Leeds United could be set to lose Max Wober in an “attack” by Borussia Monchengladbach, according to Bild.
On page 12 of the German publication’s edition on Thursday morning [29 August], it was reported that Gladbach – where Wober spent last season on loan – are still trying to secure a permanent deal for the defender.
It is thought Leeds are demanding a fee in the region of £16.8m for Wober, with a decreasing likelihood that they would be able to adequately replace him.
The Bundesliga outfit, however, are struggling to gather the funds for a bid, even if they sell West Ham-linked Manu Kone before the deadline [Bild, 27 August].
Leeds United demand over £16m for Max Wober
Having been raided for their star-studded squad after missing out on the Premier League, the Whites are well entitled to dig their heels in.
The club are still reeling from several key player sales and are very light in numerous areas of Daniel Farke’s squad.
Beyond Wober, Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk, Farke only has youngster James Debayo in a limited pool of central defensive options among a 21-man squad, although Ethan Ampadu can play their too as he did for much of last season.

Leeds are still very much in the hunt for additions and could sign further defenders before the deadline, but risk being held to ransom due to their clear urgent need for numbers in the team.
Whilst the Whites would secure a healthy sum if they did sell Wober – they have absolutely no reason to settle for less regardless of Gladbach’s constraints – there is little point if there is no time to properly reinvest it into replacements.
In other Leeds news, the club want to sign this international midfielder “more than ever” before Friday night.
