Marcelo Bielsa admires Maxwel Cornet, Leeds United not currently trying to sign him from Lyon

Marcelo Bielsa is an admirer of Lyon star Maxwel Cornet but Leeds United are unlikely to make a bid for him, according to Alan Nixon.

Writing for The Sun, Nixon claims the 24-year-old is being pursued by Premier League rivals Burnley, who are in talks over a “shock” £13million bid for the Ivory Coast international.

A natural winger who has been deployed at left-back in recent seasons for Lyon, Cornet has been linked with a move to Leeds in recent months.

However, while Nixon writes that Cornet’s “pace and skill” are “attractive” qualities to Bielsa, amid a squad shake-up, the Whites are “unlikely to return” for him.

Nixon previously reported in June that the West Yorkshire club had baulked at the French side’s £20million valuation.

It’s clear to see that the Whites will not be pressured into making signings for the sake of it.

Let’s face it, if we wanted Cornet that badly we could blow Burnley out of the water and they wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.

The Clarets have shown an unwillingness in recent years to splash the cash, with Sean Dyche operating on a much more limited budget, while with all due respect they are not the most fashionable of clubs at the moment.

Leeds, meanwhile, have much higher aspirations than maintaining their Premier League status, and last season’s top-10 finish proved that the Whites are back on the map and ready to make a bid for the top again.

Someone like Cornet would be perfect at Elland Road given his pace and versatility down the left-hand side, but it’s not exactly an area we need to urgently strengthen in.

Junior Firpo and Jack Harrison both signed permanent deals this summer and will likely occupy the left-back and left-midfield positions respectively, and there is adequate cover for the time being in Stuart Dallas.

In other Leeds United news, this Whites player is on the brink of completing a transfer away from Elland Road.
