Kiko Casilla and Leeds United agree terms with Elche, deal set to be completed next week

Kiko Casilla and Leeds United have agreed on terms with Elche and the goalkeeper is expected to complete his move to Spain next week, according to EFE.

The Spanish news outlet claims their Elche source has told them that “the agreement is closed” with Leeds and Casilla, and that he is “expected” to be in the town of Algorfa in the coming days.

The Spaniard’s one-year loan is expected to be wrapped up next week.

Moving forwards

Casilla’s time in West Yorkshire has been tumultuous, to say the least.

Even if we just stick to his actual footballing ability, he has been a huge disappointment at the Whites.

After playing 43 times for La Liga giants Real Madrid in three-and-a-half years, there was a real sense of excitement at Elland Road as he made the move to Leeds in January 2019, when we were still plying our trade in the second-tier of English football.

His transfer was seen as a real coup, but it’s been pretty disastrous.

Casilla did make 36 appearances in our 2019/20 Championship-winning campaign but he was usurped by young Frenchman Illan Meslier towards the end of the season, and we haven’t looked back since.

He was afforded a few farewell appearances towards the end of the Premier League campaign but his place in the squad was clear – he was now an understudy to someone 13-years his junior.

The Spaniard appeared to be a popular member of the dressing room and well-regarded by Marcelo Bielsa, but he won’t be a miss to many fans who grew tired of the howlers he was producing in goal.

As a side with European aspirations in the not too distant future we have to be a bit more ruthless over the future of some players, and Casilla is certainly one who proved he was not up to the gold standard.

In other Leeds United news, Fabrizio Romano made a bizarre Whites-Alioski suggestion on Friday night.
