Manchester City to make formal approach to sign Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips in June

Manchester City are likely to make “an official approach” to Leeds United to sign midfielder Kalvin Phillips before the end of June, according to The Telegraph journalist James Ducker.

Writing on The Telegraph website on 8 June, Ducker reported that the Premier League champions will ramp up their interest in signing the 26-year-old once the current internationals are out of the way.

It is understood that City see England star Phillips, who went off injured early on against Germany on Tuesday (7 June) as a replacement for Fernandinho.

Why wait?

Phillips’ early injury against Germany on Tuesday night shouldn’t stop clubs from trying to sign him.

It’s been a season of frustration for the midfielder, who only managed to play 20 times in the 2021/22 Premier League campaign due to injury issues.

As quoted by LeedsLive, Gareth Southgate said that Phillips has suffered “quite a severe dead leg”, which may mean that he’s unable to play anymore for the Three Lions in their current set of Nations League fixtures.

if that’s the case, why are Man City waiting around?

Pep Guardiola surely has the cash available to him to buy the entire Leeds United squad if he wants it and City know that Fernandinho is leaving and that Phillips is one of the best at what he does in the whole of Europe.

We’ll be absolutely gutted if Phillips leaves.

Raphinha can go, Illan Meslier can go and Patrick Bamford can go too. But Phillips leaving would be heartbreaking.

However, it would at least give the Whites plenty of money to go out there and sign new players and really turn their squad into one that’s capable of challenging in the Premier League.
