Manchester City make move for Leeds United target Sergio Gomez

Manchester City have moved to the front of the queue for Leeds target Sergio Gomez and are looking to close a £15m deal, according to 90min.

The Spaniard has shone out in Belgium for Anderlecht as a left-back and left-wing-back, and had been reported to be a summer target for the Whites [TeamTalk, March 23].

But after some interest from Aston Villa too, it’s now the Premier League champions who have made the move for the 21-year-old with Sacha Tavolieri reporting they have made a bid worth £8.3m.

City want to sign him as part of their wider football group and then immediately loan him to La Liga side Girona, as they look to develop him for the future.

Leeds don’t look to be in the race anymore despite Jesse Marsch admitting the club want a left-back following injury to Junior Firpo and Stuart Dallas.

Eye for talent

Gomez has taken Belgium by storm and it’s clear that he’s a very talented, attacking left-back with great potential.

While Leeds look unlikely to make a move and be able to bring him in ahead of Champions League giants like Man City, it does show that they’re doing something right.

To be able to identify talent like that early enough that they’re available for relatively minimal fees is a positive thing and means that they will be able to find gems for themselves.

The likes of Raphinha, Jack Harrison, Illan Meslier and most recently Luis Sinisterra have been found in a similar way and have been great performers for the club.

It’s a great model to work by in the transfer window and keeps the club in a good place in the Premier League, so despite this one not quite working out fans should be pleased by the progress made at the club.

In other Leeds news, the club have made a major transfer decision with a big Tuesday announcement
