Long-term Leeds United target Sean McGurk is available to sign

The pathway is clear for Leeds United to sign English teenager Sean McGurk this summer, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

McGurk, currently contracted to Wigan Athletic, has been linked with a move to the Whites for nearly 12 months now, with the Daily Mail reporting interest on July 20 2020.

He stayed at the League One side for the 2020/21 campaign, but that hasn’t stopped the links from persisting.

Nixon has regularly reported Leeds interest in McGurk, and he gave an update on their pursuit of the 18-year-old on his personal Twitter profile on Monday night [21/06/21.

He said: “Leeds have wanted him for some time and now they can sign him…”

McGurk is out of contract on June 30, meaning he would be free to join Leeds next week, although Wigan announced last month that they have offered a professional contract to him.

Bolstering the ranks

McGurk is unlikely to come straight into the Leeds first-team squad, given his inability to break into the Latics senior group.

But he will likely be handed a similar role to that of Joe Gelhardt, who made an identical move last year when he swapped Wigan for the Whites.

Gelhardt failed to make a first-team outing last term but he was named on the bench several times by Marcelo Bielsa after impressing for the Under-23s side who won the Premier League 2 (Division 2) title.

With a number of our young stars likely to gain their own personal promotions ahead of next season, or more chances in the first-team, it is vital that we reinforce our second-string squad to compete in the top division of the Premier League 2 against much tougher opposition like Chelsea and Manchester City.

Those sides will have some of the best young talents in Europe, so it is vital we do not stand still and make sure we add to the exciting core we have at Thorp Arch.

The club’s long-term interest in McGurk suggests he is a star in the making, so it seems logical that we make another move for him now that he is free to join.
