Liam Millar transfer is sure thing as Leeds United ready move now

Liam Millar’s transfer away from FC Basel is a “sure thing” amid interest from Leeds United this summer, according to The Athletic.

The online source reported [25 June] that the 24-year-old has one year left on his current deal in Switzerland, but with a release clause in his contract, a move looks likely in the summer transfer window.

Leeds have been tracking the forward’s progress, who is currently away with Canada at Copa America, having experienced a breakthrough season with Preston in the Championship.

It is understood that the player is keen to put pen to paper on a long-term deal back in England following a series of loan spells over the last few seasons [The Athletic].

Liam Millar summer exit likely as Leeds United circle for transfer

Millar was one of the most surprising performers in the Championship this season, notching five goals and five assists in 35 appearances as Preston broke into the top half of the table.

Considering the player’s ability to deputise on either flank, as well as through the middle, he could be a sensible replacement if the worst were to happen and Crysencio Summerville departed the club this summer.

Of course, few players will be able to fill the Dutchman’s shoes at Elland Road, but Daniel Farke will need a like-for-like replacement if Leeds sell him on amid plenty of Premier League and European interest.

Millar has never really been able to settle down at a club, going on four separate loan spells since 2018, when he was still plying his trade with Liverpool.

Having only made one senior appearance for the Reds after coming through their academy, Millar moved to Basel in the summer of 2021, going on to score 13 times in 96 matches.

The 24-year-old is by no means a prolific goalscorer, but Farke will still be hoping to have some firepower at Elland Road once the 2024/25 campaign rolls around, though Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Wilfried Gnonto have all been linked with moves away.

While Leeds need to be careful of their spending this summer, Millar having just a year left on his current contract could see any price tag drop significantly. If not, it will be interesting to see what the release clause is.
