Lewis Bate passes Leeds United medical, announcement due on Thursday
Chelsea midfielder Lewis Bate has passed a medical at Leeds United and is set to be announced as their new signing on Thursday, according to Simon Johnson.
The Athletic journalist, writing on his personal Twitter profile on Wednesday night [21/07/21], claims there are no hitches to the deal, despite the announcement date being moved.
He said: “Just a minor update on Lewis Bate’s transfer. Won’t be announced tonight now. Been told his move from Chelsea to Leeds United will be confirmed tomorrow (Thursday) instead, when he will also be officially registered as a Leeds player. Nothing for Leeds fans to be worried about.
“He passed his medical earlier today [Wednesday].”
This deal is surely in the bag now, and it’s a coup given the competition involved for the 18-year-old’s signature.
Bate has attracted considerable interest from Liverpool, Southampton and West Ham, but he has opted to join the Whites revolution under Marcelo Bielsa and he will add further quality to the youth ranks at Thorp Arch.
The central midfielder will head straight for the Under-23s side but that’s not to say he won’t be called up to first-team action in the not too distant future.
Bielsa has shown his willingness to give youth a chance, and that will have persuaded the English teenager to head for west Yorkshire.
It’s a big move – he will be leaving London behind without tasting senior action.
But he will be in the perfect environment to grow as a player and person, and Mark Jackson’s side will have another huge talent in their ranks to join fellow new recruits Sean McGurk and Amari Miller, who joined from Wigan Athletic and Birmingham City respectively.
