Leeds want to sign Napoli attacker Eljif Elmas
Leeds United want to sign Napoli and North Macedonia attacker Eljif Elmas, according to The Athletic.
The online news outlet reports that Borussia Dortmund and Benfica are also interested in the 21-year-old, who’s described as “an exciting young talent”.
It is understood that Leeds, Dortmund and Benfica have all shown interest in Elmas over the last year with an array of loan and permanent deals mooted.
Although the attacking midfielder was a regular for Napoli last season as he made 44 appearances in all competitions, he only started three Serie A matches and The Athletic adds that the change of manager in Naples could “encourage suitors to chance
New midfield threat for Leeds?
Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta need to add to their central midfield options in the summer as last season, Leeds found themselves short in those areas.
While Stuart Dallas and Tyler Roberts stepped up in Bielsa’s hour of need, just imagine what the Whites could achieve if they had proper central midfielders in the squad who could really add some spark and creativity to the side.
Based on The Athletic’s ‘The Radar’ special ahead of Euro 2020, Elmas could do just that.
He’s described as a creative dynamo who “is at his best when carrying the ball forwards, driving at defences or weaving his way out of tight spaces”.
Elmas is said to prefer a ‘mezzala’ role, which sees him play centrally but drift out to the left. His agent has reportedly expressed concerns about the North Macedonian playing out of position at Napoli, which could further increase Leeds’ chances of signing him.
Elmas sounds like a gem of a player who’s not getting a fair rub of the green at Napoli.
While it would be hard to beat Dortmund and Benfica to the player’s signature as they can promise continental football, Leeds could promise increased first-team opportunities and the chance to play for the best coach in the world in front of the best fans in the world.
It could also help Leeds that fan favourite Ezgjan Alioski is an international teammate of Elmas and that Napoli have been linked with signing the Elland Road left-back [Il Napolista].
We’ll see how that pans out but it doesn’t seem impossible to sign Elmas at all.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites have agreed a £13million deal plus bonuses to complete a transfer on July 1.
