Leeds United's World Cup scouting mission for Mohamed Amoura takes twist after 'major' update
Leeds United are said to be tracking the success of their transfer targets at this year's World Cup, with Algeria's Mohamed Amoura a summer target.
The Whites are expected to have a two-phase assault on the transfer market this summer, with one intensive period underway right now.
Leeds will then look to conclude the second part of their business after the World Cup finishes, as Paraag Marathe admits a strategic approach will be needed to ensure success in the market.
Amoura was on the Whites' radar in January, as speculation gathered towards the end of the winter window after the forward was left out of one of VfL Wolfsburg's matchday squads.
Daniel Farke still wants to sign a versatile forward this summer, and the Wolfsburg attacker can play almost across all areas of the front line.
However, Leeds' scouting mission for Amoura may have taken a turn after a recent squad update for Algeria.
Leeds may lack Mohamed Amoura data this summer; here's why
It's said that Leeds will monitor the performances of transfer-listed transfer targets at this year's World Cup, as reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post.
This suggests that the Whites will use the tournament to do some final scouting on shortlisted players, using data that could possibly influence their final transfer decisions.
French outlet L'Equipe reported in April that Leeds had a genuine interest in Amoura, who they would assess once more this summer.
However, Ghana Soccer Net have relayed information that the 26-year-old has picked up a thigh injury during a training session for Algeria, which made him miss his nation's second World Cup group game against Jordan.
Amoura could also be absent for a crucial game against Austria in what has been described as a "major blow" for Algeria.
That being said, Leeds may not have any more data left to use from the striker this summer, which could make the prospect of signing him more of a gamble.
When could Leeds see Amoura return to action?
It's likely that any potential move for Amoura would have come after the World Cup in the second phase of Leeds' transfer rush.
The Algerian still has a chance of featuring again, though, as his nation currently sits third in Group. J, and in with a chance of qualifying for the Round of 32.
Algeria will play the USA in the Round of 32, as it stands, but a loss to Austria in their final group game on Sunday could prevent them from progressing, though unlikely.
There's still a possibility for Leeds to see Amoura in action during the knockout stages, and it could be the make-or-break games that see the Whites make their final transfer decision on him.
