Leeds United want to sign Portuguese midfielder Samu as free transfer update emerges in newspaper
Leeds United are interested in signing Vizela midfielder Samu, joining a transfer race ahead of the summer transfer window, according to Record.
The Portuguese newspaper reported [5 April, page 18] that Leeds and Southampton have been keeping tabs on the 27-year-old Vizela captain, who has notched three goals and two assists in Liga Portugal this season.
It is understood that Samu is nearing the end of his contract with relegation-threatened Vizela, which would mean that the Whites may be able to secure his services for free in the summer.
Will Leeds United sign a midfielder during the summer transfer window?
If Daniel Farke is able to claim promotion back to the Premier League for Leeds, players will be lining up to join the project currently being built at Elland Road.
With so many youngsters in the team, dominating in the Championship this season, becoming a player at Elland Road will be a very exciting prospect come the summer.
Although Farke has been gifted with a number of talented midfielders in the squad, it will be vital that Leeds make enough additions in the Premier League to avoid dropping straight back down next season.
There is also no guarantee that his current squad will stay together, which would suggest why the Whites have been linked with a move for former Leeds star Kalvin Phillips ahead of the summer transfer window.
Samu, who has made over 150 appearances for Vizela since 2019, would be a much cheaper alternative to Phillips. However, his lack of experience in bigger European leagues might come as a worry to some.

While it is important to think ahead to the summer, all eyes will be fixated on the Championship title race, with Leeds battling against Leicester City and Ipswich Town for automatic promotion.
Southampton, who are also said to be interested in Samu, have slowly petered out of the title race, which would seemingly give the Whites a boost in the transfer race.
