Leeds United want to sign Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha in January

Leeds United are in the race to sign Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha in a blockbuster January transfer, according to journalist Matteo Moretto.

The Whites are keen to add to their forward line during the January transfer window, having failed with bids to sign Charles De Ketelaere and Cody Gakpo during the summer.

Now Leeds are part of a race that includes three other Premier League sides to sign the 23-year-old according to Moretto, who has previously written for publications such as Sports Illustrated, with the forward looking to leave the Spanish club for more regular football after being left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad.

“The bid for Matheus Cunha opens,” Moretto wrote on his personal Twitter account (3 December).

“Aston Villa are interested, as we reported a few days ago, but Lopetegui’s Wolves push hard and take the lead. Leeds and Everton, further away, but in the race. Nothing is 100% closed yet.”

Ambitious

Leeds need a striker who can get goals and help to create for the other attackers in the team, and Cunha certainly fits that bill despite his struggles in the Spanish capital.

Cunha is technically brilliant, able to use both feet, dribble, play across the entire front line, score goals, assist and also works hard for the team off the ball. He’s every manager’s dream.

Leeds United

So why would he come to Leeds from Atletico Madrid? It’s certainly a move that is ambitious, but people would have said the same about Gakpo and that was 99.9% done according to Jesse Marsch.

It won’t be easy, but Atletico aren’t likely to demand an incredibly high fee to let him leave because he isn’t a key player there and we’re capable of competing with all the other teams named both financially and also when it comes to league positions.

It would be a brilliant signing, and one that would show great ambition to cement our Premier League status and go up a level, so if it’s possible to do the club should be all in on it just as they were with CDK and Gakpo in the summer.
