Cody Gakpo goal at World Cup for Netherlands means Leeds United have no chance of a January deal

There has been plenty of talk about Leeds United’s pursuit of PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo spilling into January, but the deal is likely dead now.

Reports suggest that the Eredivisie club are still open to selling their star man during the window if a club can stump up the £42m required, despite his incredible form this season.

But while Leeds are still interested in a deal ahead of the likes of Southampton, Manchester United and Liverpool, the player is reportedly not keen on a move to Elland Road.

That hasn’t stopped fans dreaming and the club hoping they can convince him as they look to find a solution to their attacking problems, but his performance on Monday night (21 November) at the World Cup has put an end to that.

The 23 year old turned in a top performance for the Netherlands as they claimed a big win over Senegal in their opening group game, claiming the man of the match award.

It was his goal late on that broke the deadlock to give his team the lead, as he broke the offside trap and showed great bravery to head the ball ahead of Edouard Mendy into the empty net.

It was believed that this would be the tournament to make or break him in the eyes of the top clubs around the world, and if he failed to impress then it could re-open the door to a club like Leeds to make a move.

But the performance and goal in front of millions of eyes has surely showed that he is ready to step up to a club at the top of the game, such is his wish anyway.

It’s a big blow for the Whites, although not an unexpected one considering the stance he took in the summer at the last minute when a deal was already agreed.

Now with Patrick Bamford’s injury issues continuing, the need for another striker is even more pressing than it was in the summer and where Gakpo appeared to be the perfect answer, he’s no longer attainable.

Leeds are going to miss out on a player they should have signed if they’d made their move earlier in the summer, and now must find someone to match his talent that is willing to make the move.
