Leeds United to sign Sean McGurk in Bosman deal

Leeds United are in talks with Wigan over a compensation settlement for out-of-contract midfielder Sean McGurk, according to The Mirror.

The newspaper claims the Whites are landing the 18-year-old on a Bosman transfer after failed bids in the last two transfer windows.

It is understood that personal terms have already been agreed with the attacking midfielder, who never made a senior appearance for Wigan before his contract at the DW Stadium expired last month.

Finally

McGurk is someone who Leeds fans will have heard of before because, as reported by The Mirror, he’s been on the club’s radar for some time.

Wigan, despite their financial woes and fall down the divisions, do have a decent academy with Leeds’ Joe Gelhardt recently emerging at the Lancashire club alongside McGurk.

McGurk, as mentioned, hasn’t played any first-team football for the Latics but he did impress in the FA Youth Cup last season.

Everton came from behind to beat Wigan 4-2 after extra time back in March but in that match, McGurk grabbed a goal and an assist for the Latics’ Under-18s.

Everton’s youth system is one of the best in the country so to stand out against them is something.

We’ll have to see how McGurk gets on but we’d expect him to play for our Under-23s next season in Premier League 2.

He’ll meet a familiar face in Gelhardt, who hit the ground running at Thorp Arch last season and there’s no doubt the coaches will be eager to sink their teeth into the up-and-coming attacking midfielder.

In other Leeds United news, another new signing could be sealed in the next 24 hours.
