Leeds United stance on Rabbi Matondo transfer shared as Rangers exit update emerges
Leeds United are not targeting Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo ahead of the August transfer deadline, according to Joe Donnohue.
The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist reported on Friday (16 August) that the Welsh international is not thought to be on Daniel Farke’s list of targets as he looks to bolster his attacking options.
Leeds are still expected to sign a new winger before the window slams shut in two weeks’ time, as Farke looks to replace Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter, but it is unlikely Matondo will move to Elland Road.
Reports from within Scotland had suggested the Rangers man was being tracked by the Whites this summer, but that suggestion is now understood to have been wide of the mark [Football Scotland, 15 August].
Will Rabbi Matondo transfer to Leeds United amid Rangers exit rumours?
Leeds United fans are desperate to see the club make some new signings this summer given the amount of major departures, but they may well have made the right call by not pursuing a move for Matondo this summer.
The Welsh international has struggled with fitness issues during his time with Rangers and even when he has been available, his form has been incredibly inconsistent. One week he’s capable of the spectacular, the next he can go missing in games.
Replacing someone as good as Summerville isn’t going to be easy and it will take a lot of money to find a player anywhere near the Ducthman’s level, but it is clear that Matondo isn’t the answer to that problem.
Hopefully, Farke and his recruitment team will be closing in on a move for one of their alternative targets instead.
With the Championship season already underway, the Whites cannot afford to waste too much time, otherwise, they may fall behind early in the promotion race, just as they did under Farke last term.
