Leeds United make Sammie Szmodics transfer admission after Blackburn Rovers exit update
Leeds United sources suggest the Whites have not formalised their interest in Blackburn Rovers star Sammie Szmodics, according to Graham Smyth.
The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist reported on Tuesday (23 July) that last season’s Championship top goalscorer is not on Daniel Farke’s list of priority transfer targets for the summer transfer window.
Leeds are understood to be looking elsewhere when it comes to attacking midfield additions as they look to sign a new number eight, while also drawing up a list of potential replacements out wide for Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto.
Reports had emerged suggesting the Whites had “formalised” their interest in Szmodics and entered the race for the Ireland international alongside Ipswich Town who have seen two bids already rejected [talkSPORT, 23 July].
Will Leeds United sign Sammie Szmodics in the summer transfer window at Elland Road?
While Szmodics would undoubtedly be an exciting addition to Farke’s Leeds United squad this summer, the Irish international doesn’t necessarily fit the profile of player the Whites are looking for at this moment in time.
Attacking reinforcements will always get fans out of their seats, but if the Whites look to bolster their options ahead of the new season, a more conventional centre-forward may well be higher on the agenda.
Any deal to sign Szmodics this summer will undoubtedly be expensive as well. Blackburn have the attacking midfielder tied down to a contract and are therefore in a position to hold out for a major fee before selling.
Even if they were willing to accept Leeds’ offer, there is nothing to suggest Ipswich Town wouldn’t be able to match or better their bid and the allure of Premier League football may be too hard to turn down.
Ultimately, this deal feels unlikely to happen at this stage of the transfer window, but these sorts of stories can change very quickly so it cannot be entirely ruled out quite yet.
