Leeds United in pursuit of Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett amid broad Newcastle United agreement

Leeds United are interested in signing Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett in the summer amid an impressive loan spell at Newcastle United, according to 90min.

The news outlet reports that Targett, 26, was “ousted” by billionaire-owned Villa in January when he was sent on loan to Newcastle but he’s since impressed in the North-East and Eddie Howe wants a permanent deal for the ex-Southampton left-back.

It is understood that there’s a “broad agreement in place” for the Magpies to sign Targett permanently for £15million.

Leeds, Leicester and Wolves are also said to be keen on Targett but 90min claims a permanent move to St James’ Park is his favoured option.

Top-class left-back

Leeds United have been crying out for a quality left-back ever since Charlie Taylor left Elland Road.

While we’ve had the likes of Ezgjan Alioski and Stuart Dallas shine there since Taylor’s move to Burnley, they’re not out-and-out left-backs and we’ve also had Laurens De Bock, Barry Douglas and Junior Firpo flop in West Yorkshire.

Targett is a proven Premier League left-back, who’s been outstanding at Newcastle since January and would easily be an improvement on Firpo.

Speaking to Football Insider on 25 April, ex-Scotland striker Frank McAvennie dubbed Targett a “wonderful player” and urged Newcastle to get that £15million tied up as soon as possible.

And you can see why because since his arrival in January, Newcastle have won eight of the 12 Premier League games he’s been eligible to play in.

Leeds do, however, have other priorities this summer.

Jesse Marsch’s side is crying out for midfield reinforcements while another striker is also going to be high on the list for the next transfer window.

They might want to give Firpo another chance to impress next season but ultimately, if you can get a player of Targett’s ilk for £15million, it’s worth a shot.
