Leeds United hold all the cards as Nico Elvedi bid readied
Leeds United are preparing to make a move for Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi once again.
The Whites have long been linked with a move for the Switzerland international.
Daniel Farke worked with the centre-back in his days with Monchengladbach between 2022 and 2023.
He has emerged as a target at Elland Road regularly in the past 12 months after promotion to the Premier League.
A deal never materialised and he remained at Borussia-Park for the most recent campaign.
Elvedi could soon be on his way to Elland Road as Leeds prepare to make their interest known once again this summer.
Leeds United ready bid for Nico Elvedi
The 29-year-old has been a virtual ever-present for the German outfit throughout his whole senior career.
After joining from Zurich in 2015, he has gone on to make 364 appearances for Monchengladbach.
In 11 seasons he's played Champions League football multiple times, although his side only finished 12th last time around.
He could soon be on his way out as Bild reported on Saturday that Leeds are prepared to pay upwards of £7.3million for Elvedi.
Things won't be straightforward for Farke and Co. as Monchengladbach chiefs don't see that fee as enough to sell the defender.
Negotiations are now set to begin for the Swiss centre-back as his contract ticks down to his expiry in the summer of 2027, meaning a departure is likely.
Why Leeds hold the cards in Elvedi deal
The five-time Bundesliga champions may be holding out for an increased transfer fee, but they may struggle.
With Elvedi's contract slowly ticking down, a cut-price exit is going to be highly likely this summer.
He has just 12 months remaining on his deal, so Leeds aren't going to be in the mood to pay an inflated fee.
That leaves Monchengladbach in a position where they may have to accept a cheaper deal than they want, or risk losing the defender on a free transfer next summer.
Leeds could in theory hold out to land a long-term target for nothing in a year, so they truly hold the cards in any negotiations.
