Leeds United get Karl Darlow clarity as announcement to be made on Man United target
Leeds United appear to be close to making an announcement on the future of goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
Darlow became a vital member of Daniel Farke's starting line-up last season as the Whites rather comfortably avoided relegation.
The Wales international had initially been behind Illan Meslier and Lucas Perri in the goalkeeping pecking order.
However, Farke trusted Darlow as the season went on and he made 22 Premier League starts in total.
Darlow's contract at Elland Road is due to expire imminently, however, meaning he is able to join another club on a free contract.
Amid interest from fierce rivals Manchester United among others, an update on Darlow's future has now emerged.
Leeds get massive transfer boost thanks to Karl Darlow news
Leeds would need to set aside a fairly large part of their transfer budget to sign a new goalkeeper this summer should Darlow depart.
While it is true the 35-year-old is not exactly a long-term option, nor is he the best goalkeeper in the division, he was more than steady last time out.
And the good news for Leeds is that, as per a report from the Daily Mail on Tuesday, Darlow is now set to sign a new two-year deal in West Yorkshire.
Man United are said to be turning their attention elsewhere in their pursuit of a new number two goalkeeper.
Leeds look set to confirm the news soon with Darlow - hailed as "exceptional" by Alan Shearer for a performance in 2020 - staying on.
How does Darlow contract news impact Leeds' transfer plans?
The good news for Leeds is that signing a new first-choice goalkeeper is not going to be a priority this summer.
That is not to say a back-up will not be sought, but that depends on whether Perri stays on.
Leeds can now afford to wait until next summer, or perhaps even January, to find a long-term number one.
For now, though, Darlow is a steady option between the sticks. Farke will instead want his transfer funds spent on other positions.
Word is that Sporting defender Ousmane Diomande remains high on Leeds' transfer radar.
Adding a top-class centre-back to what Leeds already have will only enhance the squad further.
That will provide a platform to then add some stardust further forward as the Whites aim to cement their status as a top-flight force once again.
