Leeds United expect Brenden Aaronson relegation clause to be triggered this summer – Phil Hay
Leeds United are expecting the relegation release clause in Brenden Aaronson’s contract to be triggered this summer, according to Phil Hay and Tom Bogert (29 May).
The American international joined the Whites last summer in a deal worth around £25m, and he appeared in 36 of 38 Premier League games as the club were relegated to the Championship on the final day.
Exits are now expected at Elland Road and according to The Athletic sources, Aaronson is one player with a clause in his contract that allows him to leave easily and the expectation is that will happen.

“U.S. international midfielder Brenden Aaronson has a relegation release clause in his Leeds United contract, sources with direct knowledge of the deal tell The Athletic,” they wrote.
“The relegation release clause means Aaronson has a much more likely route to departing the club this summer, with interested clubs needing only to trigger the clause to open contract talks. Sources are expecting the clause to be triggered this summer.”

Aaronson came to the club last summer and was expected to be a key member of the team while transforming the attacking department of the squad.
After an initially good start to the campaign, he quickly dwindled and went missing quickly once the squad started really struggling for results.

He was a favourite of Jesse Marsch’s and one he got sacked, Aaronson was a shadow of himself and barely mustered a meaningful performance in the run-in which helped us to get relegated.
It’s interesting to hear that the clause is expected to be triggered because based on his performances this season it’s hard to see who would see him as an improvement to their current squad.
It’s almost certainly not going to be a Premier League side who pick him up, meaning his stint in the best league in the world will last just 12 months before he’s shipped off to another country to kickstart his career once more.
In other Leeds news, the club are preparing for an exit to another first-team ace with Premier League clubs circling.
