Leeds United edge closer to signing ‘best left-back in MLS’ amid Kai Wagner speculation
Philadelphia Union left-back Kai Wagner is getting closer to a move to Europe amid speculation linking him with Leeds United, according to French football columnist Kevin Nieto.
Writing via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday night (10 August), Forbes journalist Manuel Veth reported that Leeds – as well as Benfica and Dinamo Zagreb – are interested in signing the 25-year-old German.
Nieto, who writes for L’Equipe and works as a scout for Formations Football, has shared big praise for Wagner, who he believes to be the best left-back in the USA.

“From what I see passing, Leeds, Zagreb and Benfica in the fight for Kai Wagner. The best left-back in MLS is getting closer to Europe (not France unfortunately),” said Nieto via his personal Twitter account on Thursday (11 August).

It seems as though the American influence at Leeds has led to their interest in Wagner.
Although he’s German – formerly of Schalke and Augsburg – the Philadelphia Union left-back has been tearing it up in the MLS for the last couple of years.
He even made the MLS All-Stars team and played in a 2-1 win over the Liga MX All-Stars this week.
It’s no surprise that he’s being dubbed as the best left-back in his league and Leeds really do need to add to that area of their squad.
Junior Firpo’s debut season at Elland Road saw him constantly either injured, getting booked or playing badly.

And with Stuart Dallas out for a long time due to his fractured femur, there isn’t any proper alternative for Jesse Marsch to use right now other than to stick someone like Pascal Struijk out in the full-back position.
Marsch has no doubt played a role in this interest but Brenden Aaronson is a former Philadelphia player and he could have also mentioned Wagner to the boss or to Victor Orta.
Let’s see how this goes but we would really like to see a new left-back arrive before we reach September.
In other Leeds United news, Fabrizio Romano has named the winner in Leeds’ race to sign this new player with a medical now “pending”.
